Hiring activity related to cybersecurity increased by a CAGR of 25% in the apparel industry since 2020

The global apparel industry witnessed a 25% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to cybersecurity since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 74% year-on-year in 2021 and decreased by 11% year-on-year in 2022.  

Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 29% share of the global apparel industry’s cybersecurity-related new job postings since 2020.  

Computer and mathematical occupations drive cybersecurity-related hiring activity

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 29%, emerged as the top cybersecurity-related job roles within the apparel industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 118% year-on-year in 2021 and falling by 5% year-on-year in 2022.  

Management occupations came in second with a share of 20%, with new job postings rising by 98% year-on-year in 2021 and by 3% year-on-year in 2022.  

The other prominent cybersecurity roles include protective service occupations (13% share) and business and financial operations occupations (8% share).  

The top five companies in the apparel industry accounted for 62% of hiring activity  

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Amazon.com, Walmart, Walt Disney, Burlington Stores, and Macy's. Together they accounted for a combined share of 62% of all cybersecurity-related new jobs in the apparel industry.  

Amazon.com posted 8,655 cybersecurity-related jobs since 2020, followed by Walmart with 1,849 jobs, and Walt Disney with 1,484 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.  

New job postings by Amazon.com increased by 76% year-on-year in 2021 and by 1% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Walmart increased by 282% in 2021 and by 36% in 2022.  

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 67% share of total new job postings since 2020  

The largest share of cybersecurity-related new job postings in the apparel industry since 2020 was in the US with 67%, followed by the UK (8%) and India (6%). The share represented by the US increased by one percentage point from 66% in 2021 to 67% in 2022.
