Patent applications related to cybersecurity increased by 49% per year on average in the apparel industry since 2020

The global apparel industry experienced a 49% increase in annual average growth rate (AAGR) in the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications between 2020 and 2022. The total number of cybersecurity-related grants decreased by an AAGR of 5% during the same period, according to GlobalData's patent analytics database.  

Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the apparel industry was 143 since 2020, while 74 applications were granted.  

The top five companies by filings accounted for 75% of patent applications  

Analysis of patent applications by assignee shows that NIKE filed the most cybersecurity patents within the apparel industry since 2020. The company filed 49 cybersecurity-related patents since 2020.  

It was followed by Inveniam Capital Partners (15 applications), VF (7 applications), Algix (6 applications) and Safran (5 applications).  

The top five companies by grants accounted for 73% of successful patent grants

Analysis of patent grants by assignee shows that NIKE was granted 14 patents related to cybersecurity within the apparel industry since 2020. It was followed by Inveniam Capital Partners (7 grants), adidas (7 grants), Safran (2 grants) and Under Armour and VF (2 grants each).

Patent activity was driven by the US with a 56% share of total patent publications

The largest share of cybersecurity-related patent publications in the apparel industry since 2020 was held by the US with 56%, followed by China (24%) and South Korea (7%).
